SYNOPSIS

The Book of Colours is a participant-observation
documentary that explores the impact of an evanglisation course for children
that uses The Book Without Words to teach children the story of Jesus
and the path of salvation; Yellow, Black, Red, White and Green; the five
colours of the book without words. The children recount the story that they
have learnt and the filmmaker invites her 10 year old daughter to join her to
interview the children and ask them questions about their relationships with
colours, including questions related to the philosophy of colour, a subset of
the philosphy of perception, particularly exploring the idea of Qualia – the
subjective feeling that you have on the inside when you see a colour. The
children also explore what it means to evangelise another child. The film
provides an insight into one of the ways that evangelsim is being propagated
and opens out into a reflection on the philiosphical insights of children and
their capacity to deeply understand the world and each other. The involvement
of the filmmaker´s own daughter provides a bridge, whilst also reflects on the
ethical challenges of making documentaries involving children, especially where
world views are being questioned.

SYNOPSIS

A filmmaker
is struck by the unexpected intimacy of drone images shot by a friend on
holiday with her new boyfriend, provoking her to explore how images that are
nomally distant and cold could be reimagined as extremely intimate reflections
of our secret inner worlds. The film opens with an exporation of the diverse
definitions and origin of the word Drone, as defined in the Merriam-Weber
dictionary, using images from popular culture and sound to provoke a relection
on how words are embedded in culture. This opening ends with the final
definition a) the male honey bee that has the sole aim of mating with the
queen, leading into two deeply intimate stories from the filmmaker and her
younger friend interveaving dorne footage and personal (current) arquive footage.
A raw, intimate and critical visual essay that reflects on the contemporary
search for love, belonging and physical and emotional security on the backdrop
of an increasingly unpredictable and violent world.

SYNOPSIS

After an unexpected encounter with the British consul in Recife, who revealed that one of his main responsibilities was to repatriate the bodies of elderly people who live across the Atlantic on cruise ships, I began investigating this surprising phenomenon. I discover that living on a cruise ship costs less than a nursing home and that this new way of life is becoming popular among some middle-class seniors. When I came across an advertisement for the inaugural voyage of the world's first residential cruise ship, focusing on "ordinary people," not the super-rich, I decided to spend some time on board, interviewing the elderly residents. The Pioneers is an observational-participatory film that takes as its starting point the stories of people who, at the end of their lives, decide to trade everything they've accumulated for a 3m2 cabin on the high seas. From an opera singer who sang with Palácios Domingos, to a former CIA agent with the onset of Alzheimer's, to a Nobel Prize winner; to an elderly truck driving couple who transported dangerous cargo between states in the US until well into their 70s. The accumulated experiences of the elderly people on board are extraordinary, fascinating, and fantastical, intertwined with a common desire to rid themselves of all worldly goods, to live in the present, and continue adventuring around the world. As we hear these extraordinary life stories, we will accompany how this group of people adapt to life on board, plotting daily adventures and overcoming the conflicts of daily life. Until one day, a story about the onboard morgue triggers an existential crisis among some of the passengers.

	SYNOPSIS
Eros delves into the depths of one of Brazil’s most notorious and cherished institutions: The Love Motel. An integral part of the urban landscape and the daily life of Brazilians, Motels are associated with erotic transgression, but also with romantic love. Through intimate and at times erotic footage, filmed by the participants themselves, Eros presents ten stories from within the four walls of 10 different motel suites. The compilation of stories provides a prism into the unique and singular ways in which people conduct their intimate and romantic relationships and how these behaviors reflect on broader social norms and realities. The film reflects on the immense diversity that exists in ways of relating, questioning preconceived ideas, provoking the spectator to reflect on their own ideas about intimacy & romantic love.FESTIVALS

As I move into focusing on directing and writing more, I will continue to produce a select number of films that align with my desire to support projects that provoke deep reflection, challenge our world views and push the boundaries of film form.
You can see my full bio/filmography here. and more information on my background on the about page on this site. Please feel free to email camille@desvia.com.br if you have a project that you would like Desvia to consider producing or co-producing.

Bio-filmografia

Rachel Daisy Ellis (1977),
British/Brazilian film director, producer, and writer with an academic background in political science, social policy and participation. I was born in the UK and moved to Recife, Brazil in 2004 where I have lived and worked since, and where my practice as a filmmaker developed.

BACKGROUND
I studied poltical science and spanish as an undergraduate degree which involved spending a year living in Ecuador, where I immersed herself in sustainable livlihoods projects with an NGO in Quito and developed skills in participatory methodologies for public policy and social and economic development. I went on to do a Masters in Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries at the LSE in London for which I was awarded a distinction and then worked for two years as a consultant with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangkok. In 2004 I moved to Brazil to coodinate an international NGO supporting projects in North and Northeast Brazil with a focus on human rights, sustainable livelihoods, sexual and reproductive health and the rights of disabled people. During my two years at the organisation I organised the first national conference on disability and sexual and reprouctive rights.
In 2006 I set up the project FotoLibras that is a participatory photography project with young deaf people and became a reference nationwide with exhibitions in Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia & beyond, reaching hundereds of young deaf people and involved publishing a Manual for implementing participatory photography projects with deaf people. The project continues to this day under the coordiantion of the young deaf people who went through the project more than a decade ago. During my time running the project I also co-cordinated the first national conference on participatory photography and art education, held in Recife invovling over a hundred teachers and practitioners in the area of participaptory approaches to art/eduation.
In 2010 I conducted the mirrowed waters project, conducting pinhole photography workshops withcommunities along the San Francsico River (https://espelhodagua2015.wordpress.com/). Also in 2010 I co-founded Desvia with director/artist Gabriel Mascaro with a desire to work on film projects with strong artistic visions that provoke debate and reflection on contemporary issues whilst pushing the boundaries of cinematographic form.

The first film that I produced was Domestica, (Housemaids) directed by Gabriel Mascaro, that premiered in Competition at IDFA in 2012. In the same year she also produced the short EBB & FLOW, which she cowrote and involved a group of young deaf people that she worked with at the FotoLibras project. The film also premiered at IDFA. At this time I also coordinated the produciton of a colletanea of articles inspired by the filme Housemaids including international authors. As well as a resource for teachers to use in schools after screenings of the film to assist with discussions about the issues and themes rasised by the film.
I went on to produce the next four films directed by Gabriel; August Winds (Locarno competition 2014), Neon Bull (Venice Orrizonti Jury Award, 2015), Divine Love (Sundance World Competition. 2019, Berlinale Panorama), The Blue Trail (Berlinale Grande Jury Award, 2025). She has cowriter credits on August Winds, and Divine Love. During this time I also coproduced several films including Rojo by Benjamin Naishtat (San Sebastian, 2018), Prayers for the Stolen by Tatiana Huezo (Un Certain Regard, Cannes, 2021), Legua by Filipa Reis & João Miller Guerra (Quinzainne des Realisateurs, 2023). I also produced the short film Peixe by artist Jonathas de Andrade that was in the São Paulo Bienale in 2016. All the 15 films produced by me have premiered in A festivals around the world, been distributed commercially and received critical acclaim. I am graduate of EAVE - European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs Network (2018).
In 2018 I premiered my first film as a director, the short documentary Mini Miss, at True/False film festival, that went on to over 40 festival and won several awards. In 2024 I released my first feature length doucmentary EROS that premiered at CPH:DOX in the Next:Wave competition for new filmmakers and went on to more than 20 festivals.

PRACTICE

Over the
last 20 years my work has traverssed grassroots socio-economic development, intra-organizational
learning of large institutions, participatory photography with young deaf people and filmmaking; producing, writing and more recently directing.
My work as a film producer started with a strong focus on how films can be
tools for social change and political reflection and a commitment to positive social change and inter-cultural understanding permeates all my work. As I have transitioned
into directing, the diverse threads of my previous work and experiences have drawn
together organically and are reflected in my practice. The filmmaking process and how that process is transcribed within the moving image is at the core of my work.

I have been
a creative producer and writer for 15 years and in 2017 decided to start directing.
My authorial work has been slowly emerging over the past few years, underpinned
by a constant curiosity and desire to explore the relationship between
individuals and social institutions and the ways that artistic practices – both
participatory and observatory - can be used to reveal engrained social dynamics.

My films
explore the human, and often intimate, side of institutionalised, heterotopic
spaces, places that are often marginalized in daily life, yet so integrated
into society that their influence on us relationally goes unperceived. But when they are viewed
through the lense of a filmic device/apparatus that sheds a new light on the
space and the way people relate to each other, the places can be reimagined, and we
are confronted with a new expanded understanding of our relationship to them. I am also deeply interested in how participation of people in the
filmming process can potentialize these dynamics and revelations. The films are
raw, intimate and often erotic.

The
integration of my academic and professional background into my creative
practice has been key to me understanding my motivations as a filmmaker. It is
an intersection that has clicked into place in the last few years and has
provided me with a solid framework for developing my artistic ideas.

	About Casa Jasmin

The “Casa Jasmin” is located in the historic centre of Recife. It is in an area of national heritage in front of the traditional Boa Vista market. It has housed the Production company Desvia since 2010 and in 2021 the house was converted to recieve guests. These guests have largly been artists, filmmakers, curators, programers, researchers. And from January 2026 we are launching the house officially as an artistic residency; Casa/Atelier (Home/Studio). In Oct 2025 the house recieved its first official residency for director/scriptwriters organised by BRLab. We are an official host for the Global Pop-Up film residency network. The Casa/Atelier call for residency proposals will be officialy open from January 2026.
On a rolling basis we will accept proposals from indivudals or groups from all artistic expressions, including curators, programmers and researchers, who wish to take part in an unstructured residency and use part or all of the house during a minimum of 2 weeks. Your time at the house can be used to work on a specific existing project, research new ideas, share work with the local community or simply rest. The artist(s) will offer the amount they can afford to contribute for their stay in the house. Projects or groups with institutional support will be expected to pay the institutional rate. This rate enables us to support artists who do not have the means to pay but would like to use the space. The institutional rates and explications about them can be found here. We are however always open to proposals when rates are not feasible for whatever reason.
The house is also available for events linked to the arts and that align with our principles at dates between residencies.
Guiding principals/values

*collective financial sustainbility. Pay what you can (including more in order to support others).

The house functions without profit. All monies rasied cover the running costs of the house including rent, maintencen, cleaning, admin costs andall promotion and communication linked to the residency. We also pay everyone who works for the residency, we believe that not-for-profit does not mean underpaying or expecting voluntary services, unless those people have another source of sufficient income. We hope that participants who can contribute more do, so that we can offer more to artist in less financially secure situations. We are committed to providing minmum of 3 cost free residencies per year.
